UEFA Champions League: New Format from 2024-25 Season
Single-Table League
The UEFA Champions League's 2024-25 season will see a drastic format change, with the tournament transitioning to a single-table league format with 36 teams.
Improved Competition
This new format aims to increase competition and excitement by pitting the best teams in Europe against each other more frequently. The single table will rank teams based on their performance throughout the season, rather than the current group stage and knockout rounds format.
Similar Changes in Europa League
The UEFA Europa League will also adopt a similar format, featuring eight matches and eight different teams.
Breaking it Down
In the new Champions League format, teams will qualify for the 36-team league through their performance in their domestic leagues and other UEFA competitions. The top teams will earn automatic qualification, while other teams will qualify through playoffs.
The teams will then compete in a single-table league format, playing against each other home and away. The top 16 teams after 34 matchdays will advance to a knockout phase, where they will compete for the championship.
